Modern Appalachia: The Magazine

Our magazine, Modern Appalachia, takes inspiration from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and specifically The American Guide Series, part of The Federal Writers' Project under Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal initiative. These travel guides, which provided employment opportunities for writers and photographers during the Great Depression, were comprised of essays and photographs meant to promote tourism in economically depressed areas across America.

Modern Appalachia  will feature contemporary writers and photographers whose work documents individuals and groups dedicated to progressing the Southern Appalachian region.

As an extension of our publishing project, online and traveling art exhibits highlighting photography from the magazine will seek to promote education and imagination in Appalachian communities.

We invite you to travel with us along the mountain trailways, cities, towns, backroads, gaps, hollows, forests and fields as we embark upon this modern Appalachian pilgrimage. We hope in the process our worldview and yours will be expanded.
