Laughing Heart Literary Festival August 3~5, 2018

In partnership with Malaprop's Bookstore, The Laughing Heart Literary Festival is an annual literary festival that brings together writers and readers from the Appalachian region, providing an intimate setting for all to share the experience of books. This year's festival will be limited to 30 attendees.

As part of the festival, our authors will discuss the craft of writing and the trail to publication. Please see below a full schedule and a list of participating authors.

The festival is held in Hot Springs, NC, an Appalachian Trail community. Hot Springs was recently voted "Best Small Mountain Town from Georgia to West Virginia" by readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine. Hot  Springs is a short drive north of Asheville, located at the junction of the Appalachian Trail and the French Broad River, a resort destination renowned for its healing hot mineral springs and scenic mountain setting.

Wilma Dykeman: A visionary for a Modern Appalachia

Our 2018 festival will honor Wilma Dykeman’s contribution to the Appalachian region.  A Friday night conversation and reading with Jim Stokely (son of Wilma Dykeman), Terry Roberts, and Amy Greene will be open to the public. Beginning this year, a scholarship for an emerging Appalachian writer to attend the festival will be awarded annually in the name of Wilma Dykeman.

The Laughing Heart Literary Festival is held at Laughing Heart Lodge, a former Jesuit retreat center. All festival events take place on the grounds. To learn more about the Lodge, please visit their website: http://www.laughingheartlodge.com
